Start with the sour rye soup

Żurek — sour rye soup — is the dish to try if you order one Polish thing in Tarnów. Ours is the local version: sour rye base with sausage, bacon, a boiled egg and bread. It is on the card as Tarnów Sour Rye Soup, 25 zł. The other soups are simpler and just as traditional: classic chicken-and-beef broth with noodles at 19 zł, tomato cream at 21 zł.

Then the pork chop, or the ribs

Breaded pork chop — kotlet schabowy — is the Sunday-dinner dish of Polish home cooking, served here with purée at 41 zł. If you would rather not have breadcrumbs, the BBQ ribs are 49 zł and the grilled salmon 52 zł. Vegetarians are not stranded: the roasted sweet potato is a full main at 39 zł, not a side. Prices come from the same database the waiter uses, so what you read here is what you pay.

And a Polish dessert if there is room

Szarlotka — apple cake — is 30 zł, cheesecake 26 zł, and the white chocolate soufflé 32 zł. Children have their own short card (broth 14 zł, pancakes 26 zł, mini burger 30 zł). Everything is served in the same room where the music plays at weekends, from noon until late.

What is żurek?
